These revelations by an American president, on tape no less, to icon American investigative journalist Bob Woodward just defy the imagination. In early February 2020 what in the world was President Trump thinking when he revealed to Woodward that he knew that the covid-19 virus was deadly, very contagious, and capable of being spread through the air as you breathe, but that he purposely down played the threat to the American people?
Knowing what he knew about how deadly the virus was, how could he then tell the American people on February 26 that the coronavirus was about to disappear from the United States. On that day the president said of the number of cases in the United States, “You have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero."
And given that the president knew that the virus could be spread through the air that we breathe how could he disparage the wearing of face masks in public and his refusal early on to wear one himself?
All this when he knew how deadly the virus could be. What was he thinking?
Well one thing he was thinking was that the virus was going to tank the economy and put a real dent in his chances of being reelected? He probably thought that if I can stall and string the public along, long enough the virus won't become a pandemic before the fall, that it won't spread so fast during the warm summer months and when it hits in late fall, by then I'll be re elected and then maybe I can take steps to confront it.
But now we know that didn't happen. Warm summer weather did not slow the spread and the President's failure to prepare the American people and the federal government response to combat the spread of the virus and its consequences, and instead to promote quack like solutions like hydroxychloroquine and even more quack like solutions such as bleach and ultraviolet light has come back to haunt him and, worse, has most likely caused more American deaths and suffering from the virus than it could or should have.
But why did Trump reveal his knowledge of the severity of the coronavirus to Woodward? Well, the answer to that is Trump's ego and his need to impress people, especially very successful people like Woodward, that he, Trump, is a very stable genius, very smart, very knowledgeable, very savvy. It was like saying to Woodward, who is demonstrably a very able journalist, that hey I'm smart too. See what I know.
And don't you think that Woodward knew how to use that very flaw in the president's character to get Trump to open up, to get the juicy quotes to make his book a revelation.
And we haven't even mentioned that Trump revealed to Woodward that the United States has a secret nuclear weapon system that neither China nor Putin's Russia knows about. Here's what he said to Woodward about that, “I have built a nuclear - a weapons system that nobody’s ever had in this country before. We have stuff that you haven’t even seen or heard about. We have stuff that Putin and Xi have never heard about before. There’s nobody, what we have is incredible,” Trump said.
Well Putin's Russia and China's Xi knows about it now.
