41st President of the United States
January 20, 1989 – January 20, 1993
He was a good man and a good president. He probably should have got a second term but the economy went into short recession in the year leading up to his reelection bid. The main indicator for this was the unemployment rate, which was climbing in 1991 and well into 1992. The recession was technically short, and markets boomed, but the unemployment rate was a killer that November. Remember that the mantra of his Democrat opponent Bill Clinton was "It's the economy stupid," and that turned out to be a winning slogan.
What strikes me most with George H. W. Bush's passing is how far American leadership and politics has deteriorated since his time. He and other leaders of his time were head and shoulders above what we now have at the helm.
On a personal note, George Herbert Walker Bush was a hero to my Dad who passed away from this earth some 10 years ago now. When I worked at the U.S. Department of Labor when H W Bush was president I managed to get a framed photograph of H W personally autographed by the president to my Dad. Dad cherished that photograph. Hung it in a place right where he kept his battery operated wheel chair.
